In the late 18th century, master distiller Basil Hayden Sr. left his home in Maryland for the greener pastures of Kentucky, bringing his family and reputation with him.
Legend has it that Basil, who was not yet familiar with the old guard's bourbon rules, wanted to make a batch simply by using the ingredients he had on hand without knowing what the traditionalists were up to hold its mash. The result was a bourbon with a uniquely highly rye-like mashbill that combined the sweetness of corn with the spicy undertones of rye.Over 200 years later, the Noe family is recognizing Basilius' masterful discovery with a high-rye, low-volume bourbon that embodies the spirit of this very first recipe.
