The availability of Cuban cigars has deteriorated drastically in recent years.
There are several reasons for this:
- COVID-19 pandemic: Cuban cigar factories have had to close at times or operate with reduced staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in production losses.
- Bad weather: Bad weather in Cuba's most important tobacco growing region, Pinar del Río, caused considerable damage to the tobacco plants and reduced harvest volumes.
- Rising global demand: Increased demand for Cuban cigars, especially from Asian countries and Russia, has further limited availability.
- Shortage of materials: Socialist inadequacies and shortages of materials such as boxes and bands have exacerbated the situation.
- Market shifts: Increased demand and export of large quantities of Cuban cigars to Asia and Russia have affected the situation.
Are there alternatives to Cuban cigars?
There are definitely cigars from other countries that offer similar flavour profiles. Cigars from Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Honduras are some examples. While they cannot completely replace the unique Cuban taste, they still offer high-quality smoking experiences. Sampler boxes, which allow you to try a range of cigars from one manufacturer, are recommended.
Otherwise, only Cuban cigarillos can be offered at present.
What is the future for Cuban cigars in Germany?
Cuban cigars will be more expensive and scarcer in the future. This will require aficionados to look for alternatives. However, it is to be hoped that the situation will ease and Habanos will once again become a natural part of the range. When that time will be, however, remains uncertain.
Can I expect the situation with Cuban cigars to improve?
The situation with Cuban cigars could improve in the future if production capacities increase again and demand can be better met. However, this is difficult to predict, as many factors influence availability.
