Glenmorangie is a whiskey distillery in Tain in the Northern Highlands of Scotland and probably one of the most famous whiskey distilleries. The malt used in the production is unpeated so that no smoke aromas detract from the mild fruity character of the Glenmorangie whiskey. The distillery uses Mainly American oak barrels. First, the raw spirit is filled in (mostly first fill) bourbon barrels for 10 years. Then the whiskey is decanted into bourbon barrels, sherry barrels, port pipes or Sauternes barrels for the finish. Glenmorangie achieves a great variability in the whiskey range.
Only whiskeys that were distilled in 1991 were used for this special whiskey. This whiskey was initially stored for many years in American oak barrels before it matured partly in ex-Oloroso sherry barrels and partly in former Burgundy barrels.
Full-bodied, floral and fruity aromas of heather honey, honeysuckle and freesia rise into the nose. These mix with orange blossoms, candied fruits, tangerines, pears and apples. This rich bouquet is complemented by a strong, unmistakable note of beeswax and accompanied by spicy notes such as oak, stone anise and chocolate. The palate is silky, creamy, mild and gentle. Juicy, sweet aromas of orange syrup, caramel biscuits, honey, vanilla, cherries and raspberries are clearly noticeable. These are accompanied by spicy notes of gooseberry, pepper and menthol. The finish is dominated by the fruity aroma with notes of baked apples and pears, brown sugar, malt sweets, a hint of cloves and oak tannin.
