Wagemut is a family run spirits company from Quickborn near Hamburg. The brand was founded by Nicolas Kröger, with Florian and Adrien Kröger now also involved in the company. Its focus is on characterful spirits, special cask maturation and handcrafted bottlings.
Wagemut XO 18 Year Old is a mature Barbados rum with a German cask finish. This bottling is considered the bigger brother of Wagemut PX Cask and combines long tropical maturation with the sweet, dark aromatic profile of Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
The rum matured for 18 years in ex bourbon casks and then received a finish of around one year in freshly emptied first fill PX sherry casks. At 43.8% vol., it is powerful, rounded and aromatic without feeling overloaded.
On the nose, it shows dark fruits, raisins, dates, vanilla, caramel, oak and sherry sweetness. On the palate, Wagemut XO is smooth, full bodied and complex with toffee, brown sugar, ripe fruit, fine spice and natural sweetness.
The finish is long, warm and pleasantly sweet spicy with dark chocolate, oak and raisins. According to the producer, the bottles are filled and numbered by Hand.
